Last WeekÕs Tasting
Prelude to the Fourth Has anyone had a barbecue yet this year? Well if it turns out that anyone gets a chance, last weekÕs tasting was a group of very interesting wines to fit the bill. We started with a very unusual white from Germany. The 2008 Dr. Heyden Oppmheimer Pinot Gris showed a powerful personality in a spicy bone dry style. As was the case last year and as is the case usually with wines of dramatic personality, quite a few tasters absolutely loved this and for quite a few others it was a bit too much. The 2008 Valle Reale Cerasuolo was, on the other hand, all well behaved charm. The rich clean rose flavors appealed to everyone. We began the reds with an unusual Gamay that also displayed a dramatic personality. The 2006 Giles Bonnefoy La Madone is for tasters who appreciate an earthy quality in their wine. The 2006 Barberani Polago Rosso from Umbria was the first of the two favorites in the tasting. This blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano showed a wonderful balance of flavors. We then showed the 2007 Clos Chanteduc Cotes du Rhone. This was also very well balanced and showed ripe and lively flavors. This was the other favorite wine of the tasting. The last red was the 2006 Piping Shrike Shiraz. Also very well liked, this showed richness of flavor and a noteable spicy character. It also allowed us to make jokes about birds.
