Red and White Bordeaux
New Arrivals To Drink Now
A selection of newly arrived bordeaux this week, all modestly priced, and for drinking now or in the shorter term. Several are lesser-known offshoots of more famous and highly sought-after chateaux, which bear some of the imprint of their more expensive cousins.

A Modern interpretation of Classic White Bordeaux
2023 Ch Thieuley Bordeaux Blanc
Dry but full of fruit, this classic blend marries the crisp flint of Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon's exotic, slightly honied flavor. It's a delicious thirst quencher with quite a bit of fruit complexity on the palate—a lot of wine for a very moderate price.
Aroma: heady and deep fruit, grapefruit, melon, and herb; Mouth: low toned, expansive and low toned, dry tropical fruit, guava, etc. notes with a nice acid cut on the finish, tropical fruit; Very Good Plus $17.99, case $14.99
2023 Marjosse, Bordeaux Blanc
More Semillon, les sClassic
Pierre Lurton runs Yquem in Sauternes and Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion. He also owns a château built by Victor Louis, the architect of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, and the adjoining vineyard.
Sémillon 52%, Sauvignon blanc 38%, Muscadelle (%). This is a different sort of white Bordeaux with more exotic, evocative flavors.
The Revue de Vin de France long touted it as one of the best basic white Bordeaux. They found the 2023 version fresh and tonic—a simple, well-developed Bordeaux.
Aroma: heady and aromatic bright spice, very nice intensity; Mouth: bright, nicely full in the mouth, vibrant, spicy acid, quince and lime in very fleshy and full body; Very Good Plus 17.99; Case, 14.99

2016 L'Impression de Mauvesin Barton, Moulis
Light, lithe, and lovely, Medoc to drink now
This was a hit last winter despite being only the second wine of a small chateau in the less well-known Haut-Medoc commune of Moulis.
But it is owned by the Barton family. In the fine 2016 vintage, it was made by the team of their famous Chateau Leoville Barton. We sold all the importer had at $25, but now we can offer it at a lower price due to our direct import. It is lovely to drink now.
Aroma: well structured, very clean, layered with a cabernet overtone; Mouth: medium bodied, nicely structured, nicely concentrated and solid, more suave than most Moulis, concentrated, with pretty flair; Very Good Plus $22.99; Case, $19.95
2020 Pierre 1er St. Emilion Grand Cru
Elegant and refined, showing notes of black prunes, blackberries, cherries, blueberries, wild myrtle, juniper berries, and nutmeg. Medium bodied, salty in the sip with a long, tasty closure. Drink now. Rushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, and rose petals all build nicely in this understated yet racy offering. Very Good Plus $35, Case 29.95
2020 Clos de Bouard Montagne St. Emilion
From the proprietor of Ch Angelus, this wine is also Merlot-based, though more modest, and is sumptuous in its own right.
“ One of the best wines I have tasted here, perhaps the best. Blueberry, mint, lavender, spice, and licorice fill out the layers nicely. This mid-weight yet flavorful Montagne Saint-Émilion has a ton to offer.” Antono Galloni Vinous
“Reveals a deep garnet-purple color, leaping from the glass with exuberant notes of ripe, juicy black plums, cherries, and raspberries, plus touches of bay leaves and lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm backbone of rounded tannins and lively freshness supporting the vibrant black fruits, finishing savory. “Wine Advocate Very Good Plus $35, Case 29.95
2018 Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet
This is a blend of 64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, the second wine of Château Sociando Mallet. It is a wine produced with the youngest vines of the property. This 2018 vintage is powerful. Lots of fruit, both on the nose and in the mouth. Then it is a rich wine with a beautiful substance and a vanilla finish. The tannins are supple. It is a complex wine capable of keeping for at least 5 to 10 years, but also very pleasant to drink today.
Best with grilled meat and other hearty fare. Very Good Plus $35, Case 29.95
